It's the only red-black hopper in the UK - to the best of my knowledge but there are, I recall, at least three other species on the mainland. I'm not sure how you'd separate them - need an expert to inform us!

I have done some researching and it appears you tell the difference between the species by the red wing patterns. This would make yours Cercopis vulnerata.

I had best say I am not 100% positive because I am not a bug expert!

The patterning is indeed slightly different, but unless you've seen loads of them, the differences probably won't be striking. It's quite possible that one of the other species is already in the UK, and has already been spotted... but unless you think to check it really is vulnerata, it could easily be overlooked. Always worth checking these, I reckons, especially in the southeast.

Certainly Cercopis - please do send details of this record to the Auchenorrhyncha Recording Scheme (www.ledra.co.uk) - it is one of a relatively small number of hoppers which are very easily identified
