Hoverfly ID anyone?
Hello all - just found one more from yesterday's walk! Unfortunately, yet again, only the one shot before it was gone! I'm going to have a stab at Parasyrphus punctulatus – who wants to shoot me down in flames?

Just a couple of points to remember, if you find another one.

Some Melangyna species are almost identical, particularly M. lasiophthalma.

P. punctulatus has black hairs on the scuttellum (not pale) and the outer ends of the abdomen spots sweep forwards and join the abdomen edge at or very near the tergite top corner edge. Particularly noticeable on tergite 3. Alternative species have straighter spots which join the abdomen edge noticeably clear of the tergite corners.
