| | | Snail-killing Fly? Hello all - another one from my lunchtime walk around the woods. Is this one of those snail-killing flies? Or am I confusing it with something else? |

If you can't find a helpful expert, have a look at this site, but there are quite a few species to consider. Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Sciomyzidae |

Janet | From what came up on a Google search for that name, superficially it would seem mine is very similar, Janet. I think unless someone else comes along and puts up a strong enough argument against, I shall label it up as P sila fimetaria. My only question for you would be: how do you know it is a male, and not a female? |

The abdomen is the main difference, when you can get the site take a look. There is another similar species but fimetaria has darkened base around the arista on the antennae I think.
Got it.. Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Psilidae
If you search the site you might find about the antennae.. also check the list we have here on dipteristsforum and the NBN Gateway for distribution then you should have a better idea.

Janet: thanks for all the info, which I've checked out and I think I would have to agree with your ID of a male Psila fimetaria. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
