| | Empis and Caddis help..... Hi everyone,
grateful for more help with these two please!
First seems to be Dance/Dagger fly , Empis spp, (again, Jason) maybe, near trees, grassy area. It kindly came to my hand too...............
This was near water and seems to be a Caddis - any ideas on ID?
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: Empis and Caddis help..... I want to say Empis tessellata for the first one.
The second one is an Alderfly (most likely Sialis lutaria), they look similar to Caddis flies but one way you can tell the difference is that Alderflies have the series of short veins along the front edge of the forewing.
They also don't like to move far from water.

| | | Re: Empis and Caddis help..... Excellent Anzu, thanks a lot!
I wanted to say E. tesselata too, but it seems there are soooo many!
Alderfly, thanks again, should have thought.............Sialis lutaria maybe as the commonest, but just genus will do.
Cheers

| | | Re: Empis and Caddis help..... Empis tessellata male is correct! Empis species are not so many, and this one is easily recognisable by the wing colour.
