Sawfly requiring ID assistance please

Well I think it must be a sawfly. S. Devon, in a wood beside an estuary, yesterday.

Not a lot to go on for the ID keys from this one quick shot, so I was hoping that someone might recognise it.

It does have something of a Sirex general appearance but, so far, I can't get anything to exactly fit

Geoff, by the wing venation I can see (I think there's a small cell) and the narrow waist I would say it's Inchneumon.

Now that I look at it again, Janet, I see that there is a dark spot on the wing which I took to be part of the thorax/abdomen join. No wonder I couldn't find it amongst the Sawflies.

Isn't a second pair of eyes wonderful!

Correct. Easiest clues here are the high number of antennal segments (pointing away from Symphyta), and the one-parted trochanter (separating Ichneumonidae from Braconidae - the only real possibilities on habitus).

For Ichneumons, I normally use the Commanster site but it is a bit limited. Although trying to identify an ichneumon . . .

I got the link on preview but when I tried after posting it doesn't come up although it's trying.

Try this from the start page, that might work then select Ichneumonidae.
