| | | help to identify flying insect My husband and I were enjoying an alfresco cider last night when a huge flying insect joined the party!! Unfortunately, we didn't have a camera to hand but I have searched the net this morning and am drawing a big fat blank trying to identify this creature.
It was about 'thumb size'. It had a hard shell and made a loud buzzing noise when flying. It was a reddy brown colour and it looked like a very big cockroach. I have looked at flying cockroaches this morning but from what I have read these are only found in America.
I was hoping someone out there may be able to help us. We thought about trying to catch it, hoping to show our son, but we felt we may cause it harm so we let it buzz off into the night.
Any info gratefully received!
Thank you

| | | Re: help to identify flying insect I've not seen one yet but you are well to the south and I'm guessing the warmer weather will have brought them on. The larvae live underground and can cause damage by eating plant roots.
They are completely harmless but it's not good to cycle with your mouth open!
Welcome to WAB.
p.s. I should have directed you to WAB images instead of external ones. There are some good ones on here like... http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/pi...hp?photo=10295
