| | | Mutant bee? Thurs teatime I observed a very large bee type thing buzzing up and down the house walls, I was amazed also a little worried about its size and I hoped it wasn't looking for a new home in my loft . It was twice the size of a Bic pen top and the same torpedo shape, it was very black and hairy with an orange area on its tail end. It reminded me of a stretched out Bumble bee (it wasn't a Bumble bee), I'm sorry I haven't any pics.
I have tried to identify it on the internet but have had no luck, can you help?
Regards. |

Do a quick search in the Gallery for horntail, see if it fits. |

| | | Re: Mutant bee? Are you sure it wasn't a bumblebee? Queen Bombus terrestris can be very big, I have seen them close to 30mm and would look even bigger when stretched. Some only have orange/buff hairs on the tail with barely noticable colour bands on the thorax and abdomen. I can't think what else would be big, black and hairy with an orange tail.

I think it may well be a queen Bombus lapidarius as peoples descriptions vary and confuse people who try to i.d.
