| | | ladybird boom By where i am there seems to be hundreds of ladybirds crawlin about. Not that I'm complaining cos I love them, but its been years since Ive seen so many. Is it the same all over the country? Or just isolated to areas? The one bad thing about so many is that its near impossible to avoid standing on them

| | | Re: ladybird boom Do you know what species of ladybird you're seeing? I was seeing large numbers of 7-spots near me a couple of weeks or so back, but now fewer.
I have noticed a few more Harlequins recently, but not large numbers + less than a couple of years ago. |

| | | Re: ladybird boom Yes, they're mating now ( ) so soon there'll be lots of larvae to chomp the aphids.
I've seen mostly 7-spots, especially in the rural English Midlands but also quite a few 14-spots, Propylea quattuordecimpunctata. What I've been missing - especially in London and other urban areas are 2-spots, Adalia bipunctata. |

| | | Re: ladybird boom blimey you are right...... i don't think i have seen a single 2-spot down here in dorset yet either and if they were around i'm pretty sure i would have. i've managed alot of the others including 11 spot and 24 spot which are normally much harder to see. harlequins are down and 7 spot numbers appear to be up here. so have you seen any Paul or anyone? |

| | | Re: ladybird boom I'm in Derby - I've got a lot of 7 spots and I saw two 2 spots yesterday. A couple of years ago we had a massive population of harlequins and very few 7 spots but I haven't seen any harlequins at all this year
A lot of the 7 spots I saw yesterday seemed to be looking after egg sacs - would that make sense?

Juliet | Yes, I remember the Derby swarms - perhaps Haxy did well there because there was no opposition as it were? Now everything is evening itself out perhaps?
Ladybirds don't lay eggs in sacs - rather you'll see little patches of orange-yellow eggs (on the underside of leaves, commonly). Mothers don't watch over their eggs (they lots of patches well separated) so I suspect that the ones you saw were looking for something to eat! |
