| | | Swarms of Black Flies Hi, I wonder if anyone knows what type of flies these are. They are plaguing our garden mainly around our apple trees. Do they present a problem?

These could be Bibionids - possibly or related to St. Mark's Flies. Anecdotally, these are possibly good pollinators of Apple trees!
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Swarms of Black Flies In Norfolk we have a problem with little fruit flies. It is very early to get them. My daughters house in Norwich last week was swarmed with them one morning, crawling on mirrors and windows. Must be the warm weather.
Had glass of wine in garden this evening and had to abandon for inside due to swarms heading for our glasses of wine. Supermarkets are doing good trade in citronella candles. |

| | | Re: Swarms of Black Flies I saw the same round my apple tree today and they did not look like fruit flies so I would go with Jason on this they did resemble St. Mark's Flies..They were very hard to get a shot of but I will try again tomorrow. |

Take care, Jason | Thanks Jason. The description fits them perfectly. We have not seen them before. Its odd that they are pollinators as they look so ugly. |

Your flies are Hawthorn Flies. They were particularly prolific this year for a couple of weeks in April. They are totally harmless and a fly fisherman's favourite early season imitation. http://www.fishingtackleshopuk.co.uk...1f34534fdb.jpg
