| | | can anyone help to id these four bees please Hi.
I think these are all bees!! can someone please give them names.
this one is very red. spent most of its time on some cow dung. but did see one flitting arround on some gorse flowers later.
not the best of photos. distinguishing feature of this one is its "egg timer" shaped body.
this one nearly completely black.
This one i photographed in july last year.
Many thanks for looking.
regards tn.

| | | Re: can anyone help to id these four bees please Cannot help with the bee’s they confuse me, but I have just stared looking at Hoverflies, the last set of photos are, I am pretty sure, of the hoverfly Volucellia pellucens.
Less sure about the third set apart from being sure that it is a Hoverfly. I think it of the genus Eristalis but whether it is pertinax, interruptus or cryptarum I am not sure.

Two points:
Firstly it would be useful to have data for the two hoverflies - date, location, species, recorder name - you can send to roger dot morris at dsl dot pipex dot com.
Second - the missing bee - my suspicions lie with a nice fresh Andrena nitida (= pubescens) but I would not be definite as there are a couple of others close to it in form.
Regards

| | | Re: can anyone help to id these four bees please Thanks for the link EUCERA. looks like a useful site for a novice like me.
However i think i have opened a can of worms now as i have just taken a closer look at my folder titled hoverflies, and on closer inspection there are at least 20 subtly different species which i must now sort out and attempt to name.
regards tn.
