this rather handsome beetle was on the wall a few days ago, 
wondered if there was any chance for an ID

I think it is a weevil. I had one just like it recently. |

It's a Weevil, a Sitona sp. - typically a microscope job.

this is possibly Sitonia striatellus. Not for sure, but there are not to many other possibilities.

klaas, thank you. it was found 4 metres from a broom. the forest my garden backs on to has both gorse and broom also, so a definite possibility. (assuming google translated the german wiki site correctly for the food plants)
