Fly for ID


Was walking across my windowsill this morning. I'm new to insect ID but my took me to Xylophagus Ater. Not sure it is though, just looked very close.

Does have 3 grey stripes on the thorax but didn't have mandibles like in the picture in my book.

Any ideas? I hope it isn't something extremely obvious now!

It's a female Chaoborid/Chironomid midge.

I would say Chironomidae, female. The dark cross vein on the wing is typical and not seen in Chaoboridae.
