crane fly id needed please

Can anyone id this crane fly for me please caught in a moth trap on 1.9.10We were on the east coast of Scotland North of Keith in Aberdeenshire

Hi Maggy and welcome!

This is in the family Pediciidae, and is Pedicia rivosa which is a large species having this unique pattern on the wings. Very nice!

Thanks for the info - we have spent some time hunting websites to id this distinctive crane fly but didnt come across this one. Do you happen to know any more about it like its national status etc or where we can find more info.We have no real knowledge of crane flies.

Maggy, you can find distribution on the NBN Gateway but records there are only those from professional recorders (or those passed to them) and don't reflect the true status. It looks to be widely distributed!

You could join the Dipterists Forum to ask about it, there is an expert who might be able to give you more of an insight. It's free to join for using the forums.

Thank you very much Janet for all the information. We have looked at the websites and have submitted a record of the pedicia rivosa and a record for anatis ocellata, both of which came to our moth trap.
