Bee-fly watch

We saw our first Bee-fly of the year today. Please indulge me with any pictures you get of these fabulous little insects. I've got a soft spot for them!

No photos, but like you saw my first this afternoon as I went through the local park to the supermarket. Did,'t see any on my wild walk this morning though.

I saw my first one of the year this afternoon in my back garden.

Unfortunately was too camera-shy for a good photo.

Found my first on Friday with a friend and saw loads today at Ashclyst Woods in Devon but I only had the compact camera. I aim to return with the 'proper' camera to try for some nice pictures. They are jittery things to creep up to without spooking them.

I saw my first one of the year on Friday too, it hovered briefly then checked out a couple of flowers and darted off out of sight! I was in the right place at the right time to get it!

So for the uninitiated.
What is a bee fly, I have seen quite a few of these at the local woods.
I assume that they are flies that look like bees.
Do they sting or bite. Is that long nose for gathering nectar?
