This is my third hoverfly species of the yr, after Eristalis and Episyrphus balteatus. In a local wildlife garden today, at 9:30. This is the only shot where its wings were open, showing the abdominal patterns. It kept stopping on the ground and vibrating the wings in an unusual way.

Quite possibly Melangyna lasiophthalma male! Read about it here

Thank you Janet! The description of the behaviour and habitat matches really well. This year I am really going to pay more attention to hoverflies!

It will take some time to become familiar with Syrphids, but stick with it as they are an interesting bunch!
