| | Any Help? Hello,
would anyone know some common spiders that would be found under rocks/logs/stones etc in British Gardens?
I cant think there would be vast amounts under one rock. But what are the more commom ones you are likely to find? Many Thanks Jack |

| | | Re: Any Help? Lurking around those situations, there are far more spider species than you would imagine, Jack.
In fact, at some stage of their lifespan, most spiders could be discovered under those conditions.
And there are also Harvestmen which although not true spiders do look rather similar.
Possibly a few more specific details might help to narrow down the possibilities. |

| | Re: Any Help? Hello Geoff, I just need some really common species, like ones that are deffinatly going to be there, probably the ones off the top of your head
Urmmm during the summer months. They have to be big enough to see with the naked eye. other than that just needs to be super common. |

| | | Re: Any Help? I went to the WAB search (again) and entered "spider under rock" as the search terms, then clicked to view posts not threads. http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fo...archid=1073116
Also, there is a yahoo thread that asks what the commonest spiders are in the UK. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...6013537AAwSfom

| | | Re: Any Help? My favourites are the Dysderidae especially 'crocata' they have especially long fangs to get in under the armour of Woodlice as is its cousin 'erythrina'
A nice tube web spider would be the Segestria 'florentina' or 'bavarica'. Florentina is another big fanged animal, look them up in Wikipedia this other link is Tegenaria gigantea saeva - British Arachnological Society Good luckwith your project

| | | Re: Any Help? Sorry Jack,
I cant help as I never see any spiders under rocks, but have seen wolf spiders on rocks and my small brick wall if this is any help.
The only thing I see under rocks is woodlice. |

| | | Re: Any Help? Try this site, Jack. Gardensafari Garden Spiders (with lots of pictures)
But every garden is different; even neighbouring properties will have totally different species.
Where I live, the season starts off with Pisaura mirabilis being the dominant spider species. Later on the Garden Spider - Araneus diadematus will become the chief species, with webs everywhere.
During the autumn, Meta segmenta and Linyphia triangularis also appear with different web designs.
Amongst the ground hunters, I regularly find some Crab Spiders (Misumena vatia is the commonest) and if I am lucky, I will spot a few Jumping spiders (Salticidae family).
Also present, particularly around the window frames is Zygiella x-notata. And there are several other occasional visitors.
However, as I said, somebody else will have a totally different list.
