Early Myathropa florea hoverfly
Early Myathropa florea hoverfly.Taken 16/03/11 - nearly a month earlier than I have seen them before in the garden. Very dull looking- wonder if it hibernated over Winter ?

Yes that is very early, my book says May onwards.

I suppose that a late hatched specimen may have found a cosy place to overwinter.

Perhaps the Hoverfly Recording Scheme website may be able to give more specific answers. I'm sure they would be glad of this record.

Must admit at first I took it for a very peculiar looking dronefly but then it dawned on me it must be a Myathropa.

Yes, Brian, with poorly developed grey patches on the thorax, I also opened my book for a think.
