Robin... if it had been me, I would have loved them to come closer so I could see what they were and maybe get some photos!  They don't bite anyway..

The only good suggestion I could find was an ant swarm. Ants of the genus Formica mate very early in the year. If it is warm enough it could happen in February. But February was very cold, so I think it can have been possibly a swarm of Formica-ants mating. Have a look if you can find an anthill around.
