Hoverfly Recording Scheme

I have heard more than once now that hoverfly recording is a good thing to get involved in.

So, onwards and upwards, I started to do some reading. On the Hoverfly Recording Scheme web site I found a handy list and ID difficulty rating.

BUT I just know there are going to be a whole list of dos and don'ts, many that I haven't thought of.

My "CV" for this job: although totally inexperienced, I have reasonably good skills with a bridge camera. I pay a lot of attention to detail and I'm quite enthusiastic (far too enthusiastic for my own good).

Have I got the job?

When can you start?

Good link Deb, I invested in stubbs and Falk, so hope to put it to good use this year, but no doubt will still be pestering the insect forum experts!

Is there a problem with the link it is taking too long to load I think this would be good as I get lots of hoverflies/drone flies round the pond and Marmalade flies on the lilies and clematis.

I have been sending them records for the past year.

They are a relatively easy going friendly bunch of people and I think the only real rules are that if you aren't absolutely certain of an identification, post some photos for a check.

They did have some image posting problems, although that may be sorted now, but I usually link images from my P base site.

All sightings are worth sending, even daily sightings of common species. If sending a load of records it is usually best to group them together and send as an e mail. They should have a standard form, providing you have Excel facilities. Just ask for information on the best methods to suit you.

I always get an id from pics on WAB then send in the results.

The first hoverfly I've caught was in the pond (hence the 'drowned rat' appearance). This is proving tricky for me, as a beginner. Eupeodes sp. possibly?
