| | | ID this bug please!!! Hi WAB Entomologists!
Any ideas as to this little critters name. (and to all you comedians out there, I mean its proper name, not its pet name!)
I'm guess it is a Green Shieldbug, Palomena prasina, but as i'm not really 'into' bugs, this is just a guess from a quick trawl through some internet images.
And can anyone recommend a good bug id book. Had a look at a few and they all have a general selection and include moths, butterflies and odonata which I don't need as I have plenty of guides on these already.
Cheers David. |

It's the Birch Shieldbug, Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale.
For literature, try 'Shieldbugs of Surrey' by Roger Hawkins. Almost 200 pages with coverage of a host of families besides Pentatomidae and Acanthosomatidae.
Take care, Jason |

Loripo has just drawn to my attention that I've put down the wrong English name. It should read Hawthorn Shieldbug. The scientific is however, correct. |

| | | Re: ID this bug please!!! Agree, it's the Hawthorn Shieldbug; found on quite a few roseaceous shrubs in addition to Hawthorn, including garden species such as cotoneaster + Pyracantha.
A smart insect! |
