| | | Fly for ID please Any chance with this one?
Found him in my kitchen this evening. I had to give him the sugar grain to keep him still as he was running about all over the place.
My only resource is Complete British Insects and I don't think he's in there. He was only about 5mm and the only one in CBI that fits that size is Lesser House-fly - Fannia canicularis. But I've a feeling this one is a Tachinid.
Any help or suggestions gratefully received.

| | | Re: Fly for ID please Dave, it certainly does have similarities in the wing venation. There is the other species such as Angioneura cyrtoneurina which I found is (or was) RDB2, associated with fens and is a woodlouse parasite. Finding a photo is impossible!
There is also a possibility it is in the same subfamily, Melanomyinae but this is all speculation really at the moment however good it looks. Do you belong to diptera.info, that would be your best bet but as you have seen it may not be conclusive.

I don't have any knowledge to offer so I'll just be using them and will feel suitably guilty. But hey, I've been doing that on WAB for years!

| | | Re: Fly for ID please Don't worry about using people with expertise, they wouldn't be there if they didn't want to help! It helps keep the brain sharp for one, but also by participating you may find something exciting which is always a bonus. I have found many flies which are quite rare, and have been able to contribute many photos to the (diptera gallery) to help others. Go for it! We all start with nil knowledge.
Well, as I can't stop the Gallery link from being a link no matter how I put it I have put the actual link!
