I apologize for the awful photo. I work in a museum and this little fellow was brought in by a member of the public. At first I thought it was a hoverfly of some description, but realised it had too many wings, and the head was wrong. I became apparent that it was a bug of some type, but as a botanist and birder, this isn't really my field. Any feedback would be great, and the details will be passed on to the finer.

Spot on, it is a rhopalid, but I would need better photos of the upperside (or examination of the specimen itself) to say much more. |

Aha - not a rhopalid at all, but Leptoglossus occidentalis, the Western Conifer Seed bug (Coreidae). If you google it you should find plenty of information about this interesting and spectacular bug! |

Yes - it has reached northern England although I don't know of any reports yet from Scotland. |
