| | | Beetle - Zahora Can anyone id this beetle which turned up on the camp site where I am staying in southern Spain, I thought it was a type of stag beetle but cannot find it anywhere. |

I was in a rush last night so did not have time to put more...it seams there are 7-8 sp of Scarites that can/have been found in Spain. Your specimen, i was thinking along the lines of Scarites (Scallophorites) buparius. Only a guess here as we don't have these in the UK... |

it is hard to tell which species it is. As Fauna tells there are some species in Spain and that doesn't make it easier.
In my mind the beetles seems to be one of the smaller species (not more than 22 mm - a little less than an inch) and in that case it is not absolutely for sure, but in my mind it is Scarites subcylindricus.
