| | | Re: Hoverfly id's Evening Martin,
I can't see enough of the insect to go further than Eristalis, which is correct. Yes, M. florea and lastly Volucella pellucens.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Hoverfly id's The first specimen has a strong wing shade which should narrow things down a bit.
The second leg tarsus (first not visible) seems black which would rule out a rather dark winged E. pertinax. The abdomen is too lightly coloured for a female E. rupium.
Which tends to leave a rather dark winged E. horticola as the most likely; and the face appears to lack a strong stripe.
But let's have some more suggestions. |

| | | Re: Hoverfly id's E. rupium can be ruled out as the hind basal two tarsomeres are yellowish.
Looking through the wing it does 'appear' to have a yellowish basal hind femur.
I would agree with E. horticola.

| | | Re: Hoverfly id's Yes, Martin, there aren't that many in the Eristalis family and that distinctive deep loop in the wing vein easily identifies the family. But the differences between some of the species are quite subtle and there can be substantial colour differences between individuals of the same species. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
