| | | Re: Small orange beetle with dark spots Nice picture. The sculpturing of the surface belongs, I think, to what used to be the Latrydiidae (Lathrydiidae). I'm tired and off to watch the football but will get back to you in the morning if no one else enlightens you! |

| | | Re: Small orange beetle with dark spots Paul - Your help is always appreciated - hope you enjoyed the match .
Theresa - Thanks for your help with the suggested ID - (having now Googled C. bifasciatus) I agree that it looks to be a very good fit in terms of size and general appearance.

| | | Re: Small orange beetle with dark spots I had what I think is C. bifasciatus last year, it looks a little different to yours Bruce. I got a pair mating too, they were around 2mm, but they walked too much to get good shots.
Look at Aridius bifasciatus Aridius bifasciatus Aridius bifasciatus (Reitter, 1877) (a mould beetle) Aridius bifasciatus
Maybe not quite there but it might be!
Janet

The Coleopterist has it named Cartoderes bifasciata (subgenus Aridius) , the German websites: Fotogalerie der Käferfauna Deutschlands - kerbtier.de & Koleopterologie.de - Kaeferverzeichnis - AG Rh. Koleopterologen have it named Cartoderes bifasciatus, while most of the web seems to call it Aridius bifasciatus...
I hope that was confusing enough |

| | | Re: Small orange beetle with dark spots Funny! Strangely though all those I found under the name of Cartodere bifasciata looked darker, so did mine. With so many beetle which are similar to one another it can at times be confusing!
Bug-guide has it under both names.. Species Cartodere bifasciatus - Aridius bifasciatus - BugGuide.Net

| | | Re: Small orange beetle with dark spots Hi everybody,
it is all the same species. I don't know who did it, but someone made the subgenus Aridius to genus. What ever it is good for. The German pages named in this thread depend on the "Die Käfer Mitteleuropas", mostly named after the first three authors "Freude, Harde, Lohse" or short term "FHL". This is kind of bible for every coleopterologist working with the central europeen beetles. And most of those books are old and need a "refresh".
On the other hand I guess the "half-life period" might not last more than ten years and then there will be someone very clever making genus Aridius a subgenus again. It is always an up and down and I guess this is work for those guys who get paid for writing and don't find any better things. We call it "Arbeitsbeschaffungsmaßnahme", means possibly the same as job-creation measure.
Regards
Klaas
