| | | Biting cranefly lookalike ID please? Hi,
My 1st post though I used to be on here a lot when I was teaching field studies! Thanks for all the past info.
Anyway last week what I took to be a cranefly (I didn't have my glasses handy) was flapping round me as I read in bed, and I could have sworn it bit me before I fell asleep. But decided I hadn't seen it correctly. Then my MIL said the same this week...
and today a welsh friend who often uses me to ID wildlife sent me a photo of what I think is the same insect. It stung or bit her husband when he tried to shoo it out the window - she's scared of daddy-long-legs.
Can anyone help ID it, please?
Thanks,
CAt

I am not the best person to identify your insect but it looks more like an ichneumon wasp than a crane fly to me. Someone should be able to i.d. it for you soon. |

| | | Re: Biting cranefly lookalike ID please? Yes, it's an Ichneumon wasp, probably an Ophion species. |

Cheers,
