Any coleopterists here? Unidentified weevil!

Are there any expert coleopterists on WAB?

I have tentatively identified this weevil as Otiorhynchus porcatus, can anyone confirm this id?

The funny thing is, after looking through several hundred weevil photos I've come to the conclusion that nearly all weevils look exactly like this one!

Hi Theresa,

there is only a small number of Weevils of the genus Otiorhynchus that can be identified by a photo. You are lucky it's possible in this case and you are lucky, too, you are right in your identification.

Most Otiorhynchus must be confirmed by dissection?

not generally. In some you have to, but most of all it is enough to see several parts in magnification. If you have a good camera it is possible in photos, too, but you have to take a series of photos out of different perspektives.

Some Otiorhynchus are without male. In these cases you sometimes need the spermatheka to identify.
