| | | Fly for ID Can any of you dipterists identify this fly?
It has iridiscent dark blue tint on its abdomen. |

| | | Re: Fly for ID Calliphoridae male, I can't say which but it's likely to be Calliphora vicina or C. vomitoria, the former being more common. A face view would help.

| | | Re: Fly for ID Thank you. How can you tell it is a male, not a female?
Also, searching in Google Images for Calliphora vicina returned pictures of this fly, which is markedly different, it is green! Is this a female, or a different morph, or a different species? |

| | | Re: Fly for ID Males have eyes close together, not in all dptera though. There is a triangle at the back where they eyes are not joined, but females of this type of fly have eyes well separated.
Don't take any notice of what you find in a google search were flies are concerned unless you know the site is likely to have correctly identified examples as you will find in diptera.info.
The green fly is still Calliphoridae, looks like a Lucilia sp. or what is called a greenbottle but there's more than one species of those and dastardly difficult to separate without a specimen.
Not all flies which look like that are Lucilia, there are some in Muscidae which look very much like these, the wing venation is your first clue.
