Trees nearby: willow, ash, alder and sycamore.
I gather there are 4 British species - any help with identification appreciated:

| | | Re: Any chance of identifying this snake fly larva? It occurred to me that an indication of scale might be helpful so here's the same pic with a scale bar added:
Length is ~12.5mm.
I understand however that this larva goes through 10 or 11 growth stages (instars) before undergoing a complete metamorphosis into the adult form (there is no pupal stage). So at 12.5mm this could be an intermediate instar - I don't know?
