Orange legged insect ID

My son and I found an insect in our kitchen today - long black body (at least 2 sections, 1 - 1.5 inches) 2 large black although quite translucent wings (possibly 2 smaller ones), 2 long antannae, 6 distinctive orange legs (which seemed to fade to black towards the ends) and what looked like a large sting at the back, although this could have been something else. It made quite a loud buzzing sound and felt quite threatening - with 2 small children around I was quite nervous about it's potential to sting. We are intrigued to find out what it is, I have looked at previous posts to try to identify it, but nothing seems to completely fit the bill. Any ideas?

Possibly an Ichneumon Wasp? Google it to see if it matches.

Yes, it has to be some sort of ichneumon. They're actually harmless (assuming your children aren't caterpillars) - as you perhaps guessed, the "sting" is an ovipositor. Some of the larger species are really quite impressive, though.
