| | | Orange legged insect ID My son and I found an insect in our kitchen today - long black body (at least 2 sections, 1 - 1.5 inches) 2 large black although quite translucent wings (possibly 2 smaller ones), 2 long antannae, 6 distinctive orange legs (which seemed to fade to black towards the ends) and what looked like a large sting at the back, although this could have been something else. It made quite a loud buzzing sound and felt quite threatening - with 2 small children around I was quite nervous about it's potential to sting. We are intrigued to find out what it is, I have looked at previous posts to try to identify it, but nothing seems to completely fit the bill. Any ideas? |

| | | Re: Orange legged insect ID Yes, it has to be some sort of ichneumon. They're actually harmless (assuming your children aren't caterpillars) - as you perhaps guessed, the "sting" is an ovipositor. Some of the larger species are really quite impressive, though. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
