Difficult! Anthomyiidae need keys, but Hydrophoria lancifer looks close. (Trying to check all those bristles! Tibia colour is important with these too). I wouldn't take that as certain, but you could try to see if that is correct.
I had one identified which is very, very similar as Hylemya nigrimana or vagans.

Having followed up on your suggestions I can see why you say it's difficult! I agree that H. lancifer does look a very good match - however I did read on one website that H. lancifer flies April to August? I'm not good at this Janet, counting bristles makes me itch  .

| | | Re: Fly for identification I have this fly (or one that looks like it!) regularly too, in fact I got a pic of one today so it might be the same as yours Bruce. Flight times are a good guide, but some do fly out of those times.
Somehow I like the sound of the name Hydrophoria lancifer better, it has that sharp look about it!
I kind of like bristles now, the more they have the more interesting.
