| | | Do cockchafers bite??! I was just wondering if anyone has ever been biten by one of these little creatures??
I never hav, but when i have come in contacted with them, they always fly in my hair!!
The worst being a couple of years ago when me & partner went for a nice evening walk on the downs with our dogs & there were hundreds of them flying up out of the grass!!!
I ended up running around like a demented windmill as they kept flying into my hair!!
I have a love hate relationship with them lol |

| | | Re: Do cockchafers bite??! Like all beetles, chafers have biting mouthparts so could bite you, although I've never known them to do it. Perhaps if you enclosed one in your hand then they might try to bite their way out? Their mouthparts aren't as cutting as some other families - the larger ground beetles can give a palpable nip ....
They're not the most elegant of fliers - strong and quite fast but without a lot of directional control: can give you quite a thump if you don't get out the way. The same applies to their relatives like the dor beetles ....

| | | Re: Do cockchafers bite??! I'm always rescuing them, they're rather clumsy, lovely though. Never been bitten, seem quite gentle.
