| | | Dragonfly ID please Hi there, it has been a while. However, I would appreciate some help with these which were all taken in Greece but I think most could be found here too. I have tried my best and sat with my ID book, I would really just like confirmation or correction of my ID's
Red Veined Darter Male?
Scarlet Darter Male?
Red Veined Darter Female and this next one has me a bit confused, I think it may be a juvenile?
I have never seen these next two before, I have had a guess at Yellow Veined Skimmer
and I think this damselfly may be a Western Willow?
I would very much appreciate some more experienced thoughts

| | | Re: Dragonfly ID please Agree 1,3 +4 are all Red-veined Darters. The blue underside to the eyes is diagnostic. 1 is a mature male + 3/4 appear to be females.
2 is a mature male Scarlet Darter- common in southern Europe with typical broad body, intense red colour + no black on the legs.
5 I don't think Yellow-veined Skimmer extends as far east as Greece. I think it's the southern form of Keeled Skimmer, which shows blue pruinescence on the thorax (unlike ours) as well as abdomen. your photo shows a brownish face + yellow pterostigma which would also support this species. |

| | | Re: Dragonfly ID please 1). Mature male Red-v Darter.
2). Mature male Scarlet Darter.
3). Female Red-v Darter.
4). Immature male Red-v Darter (lacks black line on side that females have).
5). Agree with Keeled Skimmer.
6). Eastern Willow Emerald is more likely in Greece. It is a 'Willow Emerald', the two cannot be separated from this photo. |
