| | | Re: Flies for i.d. please. Afternoon Tups,
First is a Hoverfly probably Lejogaster sp., next is a Soldierfly Chloromyia formosa and the last being Mesembrina meridiana, skipping the penultimate.
Take care, Jason |

I did think about Mesembrina meridiana (honest). I had some identified a few years ago but there was a group of them rather than this solitary one.
Any takers for the other fly? |

| | | Re: Flies for i.d. please. Sorry - John Coldwell is Oxycera on WAB, a real expert in my eyes. He's very ' up' on these ones. The quant-thing just meaning I don't touch these ones personally...
I'll see if I can get Google to design a translator for my posts in future !! |

| | | Re: Flies for i.d. please. Your first one is a toss up between Platycheirus and Cheilosia, going by what I can see below the eye margin I think Cheilosia, male.
#2, I wouldn't be so certain about it being Chloromyia formosa. For a start it looks like a male, the male of C. formosa has a gold abdomen, the female has green.
#3 is a Muscidae male.
#4, hmm, could be M. meridiana but the abdomen looks a little too blue. To be honest I really don't know, the wings do look to be correct but I haven't a clue if there's another with wings that look the same and has a similar body shape. Could easily be another, more angles and closer shots might be needed to say anything more but someone with more knowledge might be able to help.
Jason, are you on drugs? Been drinking?
Janet

Janet | Thank you for these suggestions. After checking them out I now realise how difficult it would be to give a definite i.d. on any of them.
As for Jason, it was after midnight so maybe he was just tired.....mmmmm |

| | | Re: Flies for i.d. please. For 3m quant, read 10ft barge-pole - it's a Muscid, so what I was saying was that I don't touch them (lacking practical experience! I'm surprised Janet didn't research the definition of that one (the meaning of Quant), being such a Googler.
I stand by the IDs given, for what it's worth. |
