1 fly to ID
Taken this morning whilst surveying a canal, loads of this species swarming all over the bank vegetation, unsure if it's a fly or hoverfly!

Possibly Rhingia campestris - but wait for someone with more knowledge than me before confirming (that means most people as I'm a beginner)

Looks a definite Rhingia campestris to me.

Yes there is no mistaking that 'snout'.

Johnny, keep a watch for the other version, R. rostrata which lacks any black on the abdomen. Your specimen has very little black but that is sufficient to make it R. campestris.

R. rostrata is uncommon but it appears to be expanding in range.
