| | | Re: Hoverflies for I.D. I'd say no. 1 is Volucella inanis, no. 2 looks like Scaeva pyrastri and no. 3 is Sphaerophoria scripta. Sorry, no clue for the others!

Dave P. | Agree with these + think 5 is a form of Merodon equestris. |

| | | Re: Hoverflies for I.D. #4 could well be a member of the Asilidae family. Or as an alternative, the Sciomyzidae. But unless somebody recognises those thorax markings I suspect it may remain unidentified.
The same goes for #6 which looks like a Platycheirus species although Melanstoma sp. is also quite possible. |

| | | Re: Hoverflies for I.D. #4 most likely Empis livida male.
#5 Melanostoma female, it looks to have reasonable dusting between the eyes which would make it M. scalare, but I can't be sure.
M. scalare females often have bright greenish halteres, but I have one which has very pale halteres so that can't be a deciding factor.

Janet | Surely you must mean 6 for the Melanostoma? |

| | | Re: Hoverflies for I.D. I think you mean #6 Janet. The numbers are on the bottom this time.
I suspect that is just an attempt to keep us alert at all times. |
