ID my Robber Fly Please

I have considered Machimus sp. for the following reasons
Dark legged
Pointed ink dipped abdomen
Short proboscis

I have added another view that might assist in identification

I look forward to your comments

Hi Les,

it looks very much like Machimus atricapillus, whick I think is also the most widespread of the Asilidae.Found in grassland ,heathland, scub & woodland clearings.

Thanks for your ID and description.
The image was taken in a meadow adjacent to Anston Stone Wood, which fits well with the location you describe.
I'm pleased to have got close with my assessment, I must be improving (bugbotherer did point me in the right direction though).
I've googled the name and found some striking images of this subject, so there's room for improvement on this front too. I cant wait till next spring.
