I have looked at the pictures in the Gallery and I think this is a common wasp -Vespula vulgaris. However, there are so many variations in the patterns on their backs that I would like confirmation please.  |

Certainly LOOKS like V. vulgaris based on what is visible. Ideally a head shot would be helpful! |

Thank you. I will try a head shot next time. I thought they were identified by the patterns on their back until I searched the Gallery. |

A suite of patterns is best: face, head (between antennae and eyes), shoulder stripe, abdominal patterning.
Sadly there is much variability to confuse things |
