It is a Devil's coach horse.

In my opinion one of the best beetles.

Used to be common in gardens when I was young. I haven't seen one for years. Fabulous beasties.

Quite a few in my garden, especially in and around the compost bin; if anything I've seen more this year than in the past few years, although that may be because I'm taking much more interest in my garden invertebrates recently.
