| | | Sawfly larva or fungal infection? Found this little dude walking along a wooden fence post. Found an internet pic of a sawfly larva called a butternut wooly worm (LOVE the name!!! ) that looks similar, but are they found in the UK? because all the sites i found them on are american sites. Could he also be a small caterpillar or larva of some kind with a horrible fungal infection?
He was only about 2mm long, by the way. |

It's a Mealybug - an unarmoured Scale Insect.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Sawfly larva or fungal infection? Cool! Thanks for the ID! I'm so relieved it didnt have some horrible fungal disease!
Is it possible to ID mealy bugs to a specific species, or just a family? |

As for species, it's not a group I have an interest in so have never found out. I assume it'd be a microscope job... |

Do you know if butternut wooly worms are found in the UK or not? |

| | | Re: Sawfly larva or fungal infection? The Butternut Wooly Worm (who came up with that one!) seems to be an American Sawfly from the Tenthredinidae family. It isn't present in the UK, as far as I am aware.
It appears similar to a Pseudococcid, but is longer and more worm-like in appearance. Probably a fair bit bigger too! |

I took a pic on the 9th august of this little dude and found a pic on this website Butternut Woolly Worm - Eriocampa juglandis photo - Tom Murray photos at pbase.com and thought they looked identical, so i presumed my photo was a butternut wooly worm (i still love saying that name!!)
If they are not native to the uk, any ideas what it is? |

| | | Re: Sawfly larva or fungal infection? It could be any one of our native Tenthredinids. What plant was it on?
I suggest you post this as a seperate query, others on here have much greater experience with these than I! |
