| | | Identification please Hi all
I am new to this site so I hope I have got everything right. I would like some help in identifying the insect in the picture.
It is about an inch long and has been a regular visitor in the garden the last few days. I first thought it was a Hornet but I am not so sure now. I have looked through all my books and cannot find anything similar.
When it flies it produces quite a loud buzz but does not seem to fly quickly. The noise is very similar to that of a May bug.
I look forward to your replies.
By the way I am down here in glorious Cornwall where the sun always shines when it is not raining.
Cheers

| | | Re: Identification please When I saw your name, John, my first thought was 'I bet he is a Cornishman'. I'm from just the other side of the water.
But to return to that fly. Can you provide an enlargement? I suspect Volucella zonaria. It does appear to be spreading it's range but I don't think they are that common in Cornwall; although I understand they are now well established in Bristol. |

Yes, it's the Hoverfly Voluella zonaria.

If you look at the hoverfly recording scheme website you can see the distribution map for this species. Hoverfly Recording Scheme - Index
Could we have details of the record - date, location grid ref and recorder

| | | Re: Identification please Hi Roger
The first time I spotted the Hoverfly was on about the 18th August.
The Location is Lanivet In Cornwall and the grid reference is SX04054 64193
post Code PL30 5HJ.
I have had a look at the distribution map and it looks like they are steadily invading the South East!
