 Can anyone identify this hoverfly for me? It looks like a syrphus ribesii but for the very pronounced yellow, raised line vertically down the face and over the head and the dark patterning on the wings. Its very handsome!

It's a female Volucella inanis. Much bigger than Syrphus, too!

Sorry I've only just seen this. The date was 14/08/10,
4.30 pm
location:- 33, marlborough road, Sheffield ( I dont know the grid ref. )
Recorder: Colleen Penny
It was on a Lisimachia Clethroides.
I asked our local Sorby Nat. History soc. s invertebrates chap, Derek Whitely about it as it says in my book that this is a southern species. He has asked me for details for the socs recording scheme as its a bit unusual up here. |
