| | | Unidentified Bees Hi everyone,
I found these two bees today on heathland in Dorset, I'd thought they may be Colletes sp. but really I have no idea! They were both around 12mm in length if I remember rightly. Sorry for the photo quality, they were quite active!
Seeing these today reminded me that I still had a bee from last year that I hadn't identified. This was seen on the 12th September, on heathland in Dorset again. I had it down as Colletes hederae but after seeing these two today I'm not too sure about this one either!
Thanks very much for your help,
Guy |

A little judicious searching reveals that Colletes succinctus is found on heathlands, and it flies in to September. Heathland bees
Although yours does look like C. hedera and the time fits, they seem to feed on Hedera and Umbellifers (Apiaceae). Colletes succinctus specialises on Calluna.

Janet | Thanks very much for your help Janet, Colletes succinctus looks spot on! They're attractive little bees, I'll have to go back and try to get some better shots now!
Thanks again,

| | | Re: Unidentified Bees Pretty certain to be Colletes succinctus. They are, as Janet suggests, Calluna specialists (for the most part), and are common on the Dorset Heaths |
