The chief difference is the long antennae on Chrysotoxum.
Other clues include a dark wing smudge and stigma on Xanthogramma (but beware of C. bicinctum), and an all yellow scuttellum. Xanthogramma also has wider complete yellow stripes on the thorax sides, although these can be difficult to see from some angles.
If you compare the species side by side it should be obvious. But also consider X. citrofasciatum which has a rather dark scuttellum and all orange legs. |
