It really depends what you want to do, and how far you want to go. The problem with pocket-sized ones is that they hardly have anything in them. If you want to be able to identify species as opposed to general groups, you generally need something much more specialist... but that comes once you've decided you really like one particular group of insects, and want to study them intensively.
To begin with, try one of Chinery's books: Complete British Insects, or Insects of Britain and Northwest Europe. They're easily found and inexpensive, and have a half-decent selection of thing to get you started (although you'll soon realise that the name "Complete British Insects" is really quite hilarious). There are something like 25,000 insect species in the UK, but some of the larger and more obvious groups like ladybirds, butterflies and moths are relatively easy to get into. Personally I prefer slightly more obscure things, but that means looking for very particular books!
I'd start with just looking around in your garden and learning what you can about whatever you find. If you can post some decent photos, then you'll always get a response here.
Good Luck!
