Could anyone ID this hoverfly please? It was feeding on Potentilla in my garden last week.

Sphaerophoria sp. female, probably S. stricta but females are not identifiable from pics.

thanks Janet, do you mean S.stricta or S. scripta by any chance? I had the latter on my short list but I'm not familiar with S. stricta.

The only way in my opinion would be to wait for a couple in-cop, then dissect the male ( barr S. scripta they all need the male dissecting). When you know his species post-dissection then you'd know her's too.
That's the MPe-65 is it not? Very nice, however taken!
