Took this picture today and cannot find it it any of my (limited) insect ID books can anyone help please.

It's the hoverfly Volucella pellucens.

Looks like a hoverfly, Volucella pellucens.

Thank you all for your very rapid and acurate responses. I will have to get some better ID books than the ones I have then I wont have to pester you. Have just been on a Hoverfly website and was astonished to read that we have 270 species !!

In which case... you may be equally astonished to learn that we have about 265 species of bee in the UK! ;-)
