| | | just what did i see today sorry no picture i realy wish today i saw what i think was a skimmer it was at least as big if not bigger than a black tailed skimmer. it was predominately vivid blue green and yellow the tail was in rings. it was nowhere near any water. it tried to land on some brambles but a dog plus people passed by and it scarpered. i waited for some time but it never came back. i've looked through the reference stuff but cant find anything similar. i intend to return tomorow for another go but as you know a missed oppurtunity is just that. any ideas where to start to look for an id or a picture regards tn

| | | Re: just what did i see today Possibly a Southern Hawker? It's certainly a large species, and when mature they have bright blue and green markings, plus one of the diagnostic features of this species is that the markings on the last few segments form complete bands.
Here are a couple of pictures, this is a mature male by Ollie:
The yellow that you describe doesn't match quite as well with this species, but when they are immature the green is more of yellow colour, although the rest of the markings aren't as vivid as mature individuals. This is an immature female by Jon, when mature the pale markings would turn green.

| | | Re: just what did i see today If you said it was like a Skimmer, you mean the tail was broad?
There is the Golden-ringed Dragonfly which has yellow rings, but that doesn't have a broad tail nor is it vivid blue green. I assume you mean a bluish green colour, and not both blue and green? Were the rings yellow?
