| | Help with identification Sorry to just join for info but this wasp type insect has me beat - in 55 years I've never seen anything the size of this. Can any of your experts help? |

It is a magnificent beast! I too think it is a Giant Wood wasp or Horntail, Urocerus gigas and despite its size, it is harmless. That's a female in the picture with a long ovipositor.

| | | Re: Help with identification Thanks for the quick responses folks. I'd never even heard of this beast before and, to be honest, it had me a bit wary because of the sheer size of it. Needless to say I'm sorry I swatted it now that I know it's harmless. Never mind, the kids got a good look at it and it's stopped any fear in them. I'll be watching for more now |
