| | | Unidentified Hornet mimicking fly Spotted this hornet sized fly (hover?) in the garden and thought it was a hornet until I got closer. Just managed to grab this indifferent shot before it loudly buzzed off - sounding like a hornet.

This is a useful record - the scheme is keen to keep a records of what occurs where, rather than simply "special" records. In this way we can start to look at broader issues such as changes in frequency. Thus, all records are "special" and often those of more recognisable species can be extremely useful. V. zinaria and V. inanis are both important climate change indicators.

V. zonaria is largely mediterranian and really only became established in the UK in the 1940s. V. inanis is a long-time resident but very southern until recently.
